Trent’s best bargains for Nov. 5 – A Quick Bite - The Lakeland Ledger - Lakeland, FL - Archive - custom men's dress shirts - Cooking

Here are my Best Bargains for the shopping week of Nov. 5.

В

Publix: Top sirloin steaks at $3.49 a pound.

Winn-Dixie: Honeysuckle basted turkeys for 69 cents a pound.

В

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  It’s a great time to be at Publix.В  The Buy-One-Get-Ones are blossoming all over the stores and beefbargains abound.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Sirloin tip roast and boneless shoulder roast both go for $2.99 a pound. Lean ground beef is $3.49 a pound. Get out grandma’s old grinder and make some super burgers for the family. Make enough to freeze. Be sure to put two pieces of waxed paper between the patties so they will separate when frozen.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Slice some nice pieces off for Swiss steak. There are lots of ways to do it, but braising in tomato sauce works well. Or pound flour into the surface of the meat and brown it. Then braise in canned beef stock. The flour should thicken the gravy.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Squash and tomatoes are simple to make for a healthy side dish and a bargain this week when yellow squash and zucchini В are 99 cents a pound and tomatoes on the vine are $1.69. You can do the dish with canned tomatoes and save a bit.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Red Delicious, Braeburn and Jonagold apples go for 97 cents a pound.В  That’s for the large size. These are great baked. Dig out the core with a melon baller or heavy spoon and fill the cavity with butter, brown sugar, raisins, nuts and cinnamon with a touch of fresh nutmeg.В

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Put each in a custard cup or glass bowl and bake until a knife pierces the apple easily.

В Serve with ice cream, whipped topping or a drizzle of caramel sauce.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  The same idea works if you slice the apples and use everything else for a topping.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  If you haven’t tried Whole Fruit Sorbet, now is the time. The fruit flavors are intense so you don’t need much and it’s BOGO at two one-pint containers for $2.89.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Publix shredded cheese is a bargain this week at three 8-ounce packages for $5. You can make it go even further by adding a bit of grated strong cheese – parmesan, or Romano work well if you have a bit left.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  BOGOs to stock up on: Betty Crocker Brownie mix, Land O Lakes spread, Johnsonville Brats, bagel chips, Duke’s mayonnaise, Barilla pasta, Ragu sauce, Hunts canned tomatoes (to go with the yellow squash), General Mills cereals, Kellogg’s Special K cereals, popcorn, Pepperidge Farm bread …. And lots more.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Be sure to check the best- before dates so you don’t end up throwing food away.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Winn-Dixie is on the holiday bandwagon this week with great deals on hams and frozen turkeys.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Ham goes for as low as 99 cents a pound for shank portion. Butterball turkeys are 99 cents and the Honeysuckle is a great deal at 69 cents. Check the label for sodium content on basted birds.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Frozen turkeys are good for ages. I used one that had been in the freezer for two years and it cooked up fine. When time and tithe are tight in the spring, haul out a bird and make a bunch of meals for little money.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Fresh cranberries and pecans are BOGO. Both will freeze well.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Boneless London Broil is BOGO and works out to $2.50 a pound for lean meat.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Assorted pork chops and split chicken breasts are also BOGO at $1.50 a pound.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Ground lamb, veal or meatloaf goes for $3.99 a pound. Ground lamb is not a popular cut so get some while you can and make a real Shepherd’s pie.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Hormel cooked ham for lunches is a no-waste item at $2.99 a pound. House brand canned vegetables are a stock-up buy at 60 cents a can. A couple of cans in stock made from turkey bones or some canned beans in the broth from a ham bone are a nutritious meal.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  There are some great coupon deals. You can get free eggs when you buy four Pillsbury products. There were coupons in Sunday’s Ledger.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  В Buy four General Mills cereals at $10 and you get $4 off. That’s $1.50 a box. Look in the bottom of your coupon holder for these.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Eight o’Clock coffee is BOGO at two-12-ounce bags for $5.18. It’s only $3.46 a pound.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  If you have time, bake some sweet potatoes (59 cents a pound), peel and freeze for a holiday casserole.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  It’s never too early to get ready for fun.

В В В В В В В В В В В В В В В  Happy $hopping.
