The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology's Human Powered Vehicle Team placed first in design at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers West Coast Human Powered Vehicle Challenge held last April 13-15 at the NASA-Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.

This year's team focused heavily on design andinnovation, choosing to create a carbon fiber composite body tub frame and a carbon fiber composite fairing for their three-wheeled recumbent vehicle. This design placed the team first in the design event, which included a written design report and an oral presentation.

The competition involved sprint and endurance competitions in addition to design. The team completed the event with an overall fourth place finish with a total of 83.75 points out of 100, finishing behind University of Missouri Rolla, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Portland State University.

The School of Mines Human Powered Vehicle Team has been competing in the West Coast HPV Challenge since 1999.
